An animated weather app where the weather moves

A weather icon tells you it's raining. An animated scene shows you, with rain sweeping across your city and lightning lighting up the skyline.

By the Meteopolis team · Updated

Meteopolis is an animated weather app: rain, snow, fog and lightning are animated live on your iPhone over a miniature of your city, matched to the real forecast. Optional ambient sounds (rain, wind, storm, snow) play along, and the app respects iOS Reduce Motion.

What moves

  • Rain: streaks sweep across the scene, heavier as the rain gets heavier.
  • Snow: flakes drift down over the skyline at different depths.
  • Fog: soft banks roll slowly across the city.
  • Storms: rain plus lightning flashes over the clouds.
  • Clear nights: twinkling stars and city lights.

The motion is drawn in real time by your phone's graphics chip, so there's no video to download. It keeps running smoothly and doesn't use your data plan. Each style gets its own take: neon rain glows, pixel snow falls in blocks.

Turn on weather sounds

  1. Open Settings in Meteopolis.
  2. Turn on Weather sound for ambient loops (clear, wind, rain, storm, snow, fog) that match your city's conditions.
  3. Sounds is a separate setting for the soft taps and clicks in the interface.

Prefer it still? Turn on Reduce motion in Meteopolis Settings (or iOS Settings → Accessibility → Motion) and the scene stays calm.
